A Unique Approach To Residential Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Unique Approach to Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Just like each person who experiences substance use disorder, addiction is complex and unique. It can emerge differently, affects individuals differently, and must be treated with a personalized solution – there is no one-size-fits-all approach to substance use disorder. That’s why at Maryland Recovery, our outpatient addiction program features a unique, individualized approach that can offer a multitude of benefits to our clients.

Affordable, Unique Treatment Program Options

There is no need for our clients to choose between an inpatient or an outpatient program; instead, our unique approach to drug and alcohol abuse treatment integrates the best features of both models into one comprehensive program. We believe that the tools necessary to return to a healthy lifestyle and the structure of our outpatient program will lead to critical changes in both thinking and behavior.

Throughout their treatment journey, our clients reside in one of our eight residential houses managed by our sober housing partner, ECHO Hartford. They participate in therapeutic sessions at our outpatient facility during the day and return to their designated home for the night. This unique structure allows our clients to focus on their recovery in a supportive environment while keeping a clear separation between their residential and care facilities.

To ensure affordability for our clients, we work with a wide range of insurance providers. Our unique approach and outpatient-oriented structure is useful here, too. Many insurance companies will cover continued care beyond the initial detox or the typical 30-day treatment period.

Three Phases of Residential Outpatient Recovery Treatment Programs

At Maryland Recovery, we offer treatment to individuals seeking primary care as well as those who have completed an initial rehab program and are looking for extended care. Our treatment program is designed to provide support throughout every phase of recovery. At each, we offer comprehensive solutions tailored to individual needs.

Our approach to substance use disorder treatment is divided into three phases.

Phase 1: Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is one of the ways you can begin or continue your sobriety journey. It is the program that delivers daily, individualized SUD treatment. Our PHP is housed in our primary facility in Bel Air, Maryland, a beautiful countryside town.

To begin, we will thoroughly assess your patient history and addiction triggers to develop a personalized long-term treatment plan. Since this is a partial hospitalization program for mental health and substance use disorders, we are able to identify and diagnose co-occurring disorders. These will be taken into account when developing your individual treatment program, with therapies aimed at addressing the root causes of SUD.

Beginning with the clinical phase of rehabilitation, we monitor your psychiatric symptoms. Our counselors will offer coping skills and other tools to address personal trauma and daily life stressors to help you remain resilient throughout your sobriety journey. This includes skills you can use while attending group therapy sessions with other clients with similar disorders and struggles.

The high level of structure at this phase is essential when starting the recovery process as it provides a supportive, structured environment for clients who feel their lives may be out of control. Phase 1 lasts for 28 days. During this time, you will attend clinical treatment for five hours a day and have individual sessions with a counselor weekly.

Our PHP is for adults over 18 years of age who are experiencing symptoms of substance use disorder but do not require 24/7 medical care. You may qualify for PHP if you need help monitoring your symptoms and learning coping skills. It is important to note that to attend, you must have already completed a detox or meet the medical criteria for this level of care.

Phase 2: Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)

After patients complete Phase 1: PHP, the next phase is Intensive Outpatient Treatment. Alternatively, some patients begin or continue ongoing treatment in IOP. IOP patients move into an outpatient setting for treatment in one of eight residential housing units. These homes are clean, comfortable, and furnished. Everyone can relax at the end of the day and build relationships with individuals with similar experiences for additional support and accountability.

Taking responsibility for oneself is part of the recovery process. During IOP, you will be assigned chores and meal prep tasks to help you learn or relearn essential life skills and prepare for your new life in sobriety.

It is also important to note that during the day, you will attend group and individual therapy sessions.

Group Therapy

Group Therapy

Group therapy sessions provide a time for you to discuss problems and experiences with others going through the same situation. Together, with counselor support, you can share healthy ways to cope with real-world situations. Additionally, group therapy can help foster relationships and help you realize you are not alone.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy sessions are designed to help you understand the underlying reasons for drug or alcohol use and take steps to eliminate their influence on your life. You can also examine ways you can improve your life and relationships with guidance from a skilled therapist.

Daily Group Activities

One of the wonderful things about our unique approach to outpatient treatment is that you have access to many therapies and strategies typically reserved for inpatient treatment. At Maryland Recovery, IOP is more than talk therapy; it also includes daily group activities and community outings. Our facilities are conveniently located close to jobs, stores, and NA and AA meeting locations.

Phase 3: Extended Care

After completing phases 1 and 2, clients can begin the Extended Care phase. In this phase, clients will continue living in one of our residential homes, undergo therapy, and learn necessary life skills that will aid the transition back into life outside the program.

Extended Care is meant to provide continued support and tools to help you function after your treatment course has ended. Without these tools, many patients struggle to reach long-term sobriety. At Maryland Recovery, we strive to ensure our extended care program provides clients with the tools and support needed for a new, sober life.

Extended Care patients are given the opportunity to interact with patients who are at the same level, as we have found that peer support boosts recovery rates. Everyone in the cohort will live together in the same residence, attend group therapy, and attend outing activities.

Phase 4: In the Works

Currently, we are developing Phase 4 of the program, which will be a non-residential rehab program for individuals who need extended sober living but also want the option of being able to attend long-term treatment without staying at our residential facilities.

The Foundation of Our Program

The foundation of our program is built upon abstinence from substance use via the 12 steps of recovery. For this reason, the program here at Maryland Recovery provides patients with a structured, task-oriented day that includes not only individual and group counseling, treatment planning, work assignments, and continuing care but also 12-step meetings.

The 12 steps involve:

  • Admitting you are powerless over your addiction
  • Turning your life over to a higher power
  • Thorough completion of a moral inventory of yourself
  • Admitting your wrongdoings to yourself, others, and a higher power
  • Asking the higher power to remove character defects and shortcomings
  • Apologizing and making amends to those you have hurt
  • Serving and mentoring others who are in the early stages of this process
The 12 Steps

The 12-step approach can help you develop self-control, honesty, accountability, direction and structure, fixing relationships, character building, willpower, balance, and overall health while reducing the chance of relapse.

It is important to note that although most patients participate in the 12-step model, it is not required of every patient. Every patient has an individualized treatment plan, and if it is determined that a 12-step approach is in your best interests, we will help you explore comparable alternatives.

Benefits of Our Approach

Our approach to addiction treatment comes with many benefits, including our affordability and insurance compatibility, our individualized treatment plan focus, and dual diagnosis treatment.

Affordability and Insurance

One of our goals at Maryland Recovery is to help as many people as possible in their journey of seeking treatment to overcome their drug or alcohol use. Due to this, we have partnered with many health insurance providers. We recommend a confidential consultation with one of our addiction treatment members, who can review your needs, provide advice, and assist you as you determine which steps you can take.

We work with Medicaid, TRICARE, Cigna, MAGELLAN, PHCS, APS Healthcare, BCBS, CareFirst, and more. Even if one of these is not your provider, we can still coordinate a treatment plan for you after a consultation and some basic information.

Individualized Focus and Plan Customization

Our holistic addiction treatment addresses the individuals’ mental, physical, and spiritual problems. Healing from addiction is a unique process for every person, and personalized treatment plans can address the individual nuances required for recovery. Personalized treatment recognizes the fact that just as every person is unique, their substance use disorder treatment plan must be unique as well. Our professionals will review your situation and develop a customized treatment plan that includes holistic and clinical services to support you in your journey to recovery.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Addiction and mental health illnesses frequently exist together and are known as co-occurring disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), about one-third of people dealing with substance use problems are also suffering from mental illness.

Finding a treatment plan that includes therapy for both addiction and mental illness conditions is important since substance use often stems from a desire to numb or eliminate psychiatric or emotional difficulties and trauma. On the other hand, substance use can contribute to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Maryland Recovery offers treatment for both substance use disorders and mental health and has become one of the most comprehensive long-term dual diagnosis facilities on the East Coast.

A failure to treat mental health issues can prompt people to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, and ignoring underlying symptoms can mean SUD and mental health issues begin to exacerbate one another. Treating both disorders is essential to achieving long-term recovery.

Testimonials

The first steps toward recovery – recognizing the negative influences of substance use in your life and seeking help to address them – are often the most difficult. Over the years, we have worked with hundreds of people who made that difficult decision and are now living their lifelong recovery journeys.

Some words of encouragement from them:

“MRP saved my life. This was my second time there, and it really taught me some self-advocacy. How can I voice my needs, be myself, and not feel ashamed? If anyone reads this and needs help, give this place a shot.” – David

“Coming to MRP was the best decision for me after going to an inpatient facility. I feel strong, motivated, and healthy. “ – Lynn J.

“Out of the 13 treatment centers I have been to throughout the state, this was by far the most beneficial of them all. “ – Domonic D.
